I’m delighted to report that Geography has been ranked within the top 10 nationally, at joint 9th, on the basis of the proportion of 4* and 3* in the overall profile. Our overall profile is 4*: 20%, 3*: 45%, 2*: 30% and 1*: 5%.
4* is defined as quality that is world-leading and of the highest standards in terms of originality, significance and rigour. 3* indicates quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality significance and rigour and just short of the highest standards of excellence. 2* is internationally recognised, while 1* is nationally recognised.
Details of the three sub-profiles (outputs, research environment, and research esteem) will be released by HEFCE in early January. The use of composite profiles this time makes direct comparison with previous RAE exercises difficult.
This outcome reflects tremendous work put in by everyone over the 7-year RAE period, and dramatic improvement on all our key indicators. An unprecedented effort also went into preparing our RAE2008 submission.
The Dean of Science, Prof Philip Beesley, adds “I am delighted to see the continuing trend of research excellence in the department and the result confirms that long term reputation of the department as one of the very best in the UK.”
