Geography, empire and cultures of exploration. This research, funded by the British Academy and AHRC, considers the relations between geographical knowledge, exploration and empire. It is reflected in various projects, including my book Geography Militant and an exhibition on Hidden histories of exploration in 2009.
Collecting and collections. This research is reflected in supervision of seven PhD projects on aspects of the geography of collecting and collections, two in collaboration with the Science Museum, one with RGS-IBG and one with the British Library.
British visions of the tropical world, 1750-1850. This research project, funded by AHRC, examined images of the tropics in a range of visual materials, from log-books to finished artworks. A book on Tropical Visions, co-edited with Luciana Martins, was published by the University of Chicago Press.
Geography and the visual arts. I have been involved in several collaborations with artists including Helen Scalway and Kathy Prendergast. The AHRC Visualising Geography project resulted in an exhibition and publication, Landing. More recently I was co-PI of the AHRC Fashioning Diaspora Space project, in collaboration with the V&A Museum.
Imperial cities: landscape, space and performance. This research project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, examined the significance of imperialism for the design and use of space in London and Rome. A book on Imperial Cities, co-edited with David Gilbert, was published by Manchester University Press.
