This is third-year course that examines human adaptation to changing environments during and immediately after the last ice age. The course integrates study of the physical environment (ice age climate; glaciation, sea ice), ice age flora and fauna, and human adaptations, based on the fossil record and archaeology.
The main themes are: overview of Pleistocene environments; Late Pleistocene environments of Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and Australia; human adaptations to Late Pleistocene environments in these regions; extinction of megafaunal mammals; Pleistocene art from caves and burials; the demise of Neanderthals; postglacial environments and human adaptations in Europe, Asia, and the New World.
