I am a historical geographer with research interests in book history and the history of science. My work addresses various aspects of the historical geographies of science and has examined, among other topics, the history of polar science and exploration; the origins of environmentalist thought in geography; the role of travel in science; the communication of scientific knowledge by print, voice, and photograph; and the popular and scholarly reception of scientific and geographical knowledge.
Before coming to Royal Holloway, I was a Research Associate at the University of Edinburgh and worked there on an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project, “Correspondence: exploration and travel from manuscript to print, 1768–1848”. The project’s findings will be communicated in a scholarly monograph, Travels into print: writing exploration, c.1780–c.1850, under contract with the University of Chicago Press.
