Rob Kemp is Professor of Physical Geography and, from August 1st 2006, Vice-Principal (Academic Affairs) at Royal Holloway, University of London.
Rob obtained BSc and MSc degrees in Physical Geography from the University of Reading and Queen's University (Ontario), respectively. Returning to the United Kingdom, he completed a PhD in Geography at Birkbeck College via a NERC CASE Studentship jointly held at Rothamsted Experimental Station in Harpenden. His first academic appointment was as a Lecturer in Soil Science at Lincoln University in New Zealand in 1985. He joined the Department of Geography at Royal Holloway in 1989, and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1996, Reader in 1997 and Professor in 1999. He served as Head of Department from January 2002 until December 2004.
Rob's research has been concerned with a range of soil-related issues spanning agriculture, sports pitch management and Quaternary Science. He has focussed particularly on the role of soils in providing information on landscape development and climatic change over the last few hundred thousand years.
