1. Bodies and Dis/ability
A central concern in my work is with the representation and experience of embodiment, health and disability. To date this has been addressed through research on walking with people who are visually-impaired.  I am particularly concerned with the challenge of representing and treating ‘the body’ as a simultaneously socio-cultural and biological phenomenon. To date I have responded to this challenge through combining interview and ethnographic research methods with insights from neurobiology.

2. Landscape Geography and Visual Impairment
Another key concern in my work is with ideas and experiences of rural and urban landscapes. In particular I am concerned with how specific landscapes ‘invite’ particular activities and the processes of inclusion and exclusion that occur. My publications show how people with visual-impairments access rural landscapes and how they subvert particularly common representations of the British rural landscape through their walking practices, their art work, their humour and their laughter.

3. Citizenship and Public Health
I have an ongoing interest in the governance of the body and physical activity; and the convergence of obesity and citizenship agendas. What is active citizenship? What is a healthy citizen? How do we embody our responsibilities as citizens? And how do citizenship agendas emerge in historical and contemporary discourses on public health?
