Toby Butler, a PhD student in the Department of Geography, has produced a unique audio walking tour of two stretches of the river Thames, exploring London’s hidden history through the voices of people who have lived and worked along the river.
You can download the audio walks, for use on an MP3 player or an i-pod, from the Memoryscape website.
Toby has been interviewed about his work on Ready Steady Book, a literary website; and Furthernoise, a sound art website. The interviews explain how Memoryscape works in practical terms, as well as the ideas about memory, place and movement which inspired the project.
Toby has also published an article on sound walks in the journal Social and Cultural Geography.
Toby’s Memoryscape project is part of his ESRC-funded PhD research on memory and place at Royal Holloway, in collaboration with the Museum of London and the Economic and Social Research Council. The research is supervised by Professor David Gilbert.
The Memoryscape project was the subject of a workshop for teachers held at the Geographical Association annual conference in 2007, the first event to be organised by the new Citizenship Working Group of the GA.
The project won a Westfocus ‘bright ideas’ prize in 2005 for innovative research with commercial potential.
