Profiles

Diana Safieh
After completing my undergraduate degree, I knew I wanted to carry on in the field of development, specialising in my homeland, Palestine. At the same time as looking for graduate courses, the opportunity opened up to intern as a Programme Co-ordinator for a charity called the Welfare Association (UK) (www.welfareassociation.org.uk). This is an organisation which provides assistance to Palestinians, mainly refugees, in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and Lebanon. Projects include community rehabilitation of disabled children, re-planting olive groves (a main source of income) that have been destroyed during the construction of the Separation Wall, and providing emergency medical supplies. I chose to do both the course and the internship part-time, because I wanted to learn about the theory and the practice simultaneously. Furthermore, when I graduated, I would have academic qualifications, as well as two years of relevant work experience under my belt when the time came to look for employment. The knowledge I gained from the Welfare Association benefitted my university work, and vice versa. When the time came to write my dissertation, the connections and contacts I made at the Welfare Association were be indispensable, and in turn, I hope my research will be useful to them too. The Welfare Association have since offered me a permanent position as Project Coordinator.
