Each research postgraduate is allocated an individual work space within
the department. In addition to extensive computing support on the Royal
Holloway campus, the Department has a postgraduate computing laboratory
dedicated to the priority use of postgraduate students. Software available
ranges from standard Microsoft Office packages, through web-page creation and
advanced graphics packages, to advanced statistical, GIS and Remote Sensing packages.
Further departmental computing facilities are available in a dedicated
digital graphics suite and the Mike Eden Laboratory, which houses an
A1 digitising tablet to support GIS applications. Computing and related
support is provided by dedicated technical staff.
Scanners and
high resolution printers are available for postgraduates, and further
A3 and A0 colour printers are available as part of the digital graphics
suite, which also houses a flat bed scanner, slide scanner and negative
film scanner. All postgraduates are, of course, able to take advantage
of the campus library facilities and the wider facilities of the University
of London (see the college prospectus for further details). Well-equipped
laboratory suites include: sediment analysis, palynology and palaeoecology,
microscopy, advanced soil, sediment and water chemistry, and geochronology.
All of the laboratory areas are supported by technical staff trained
in appropriate analytical techniques. Further information on laboratory
facilities is given in the sections on departmental research groups.
