I welcome applications from suitably qualified students who are interested in Non-Governmental Organisation and Civil Society, Community Participation, Low-income housing for the urban poor, Impact of Globalisation and Economic Liberalisation on Gender, Poverty, survival strategies and livelihoods in urban context and ageing.
Postdoctoral supervision
- Yutaka Sato finished his PhD at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi), in July 2006 on “Urban Poverty, women’s empowerment and grassroot organisations in slums of Ahmedabad, India”. He was awarded the 2006 Canon Foundation Research Fellowship in Europe to spend a year (Sept. 2006 – Aug.2007) in the department collaborating on research with Dr. Vandana Desai. His main research interests are in urban poverty, gender, grassroot organisations and community participation, and he has extensive experience of working with grassroot NGOs in Ahmedabad.

- Alli Dhanaraj (PhD), " The Institutions for the Care of The Aged - a socio-economic Study in Chennai ", funded by the Commonwealth Scholarships (Split-Site award), co-supervisor from Sept. 2001 -Sept 2002 based at the Mother Teresa Women's University, Kodaikanal , India .
- Samantha French (PhD), " Empowerment, Social Capital and Non-Governmental Organisations In India ", funded by Royal Holloway College fees only studentship, principal supervisor from Jan.2001 (withdrew due to financial hardship).
- Tariq Jazeel (PhD), " Sri - Lankan identities: Imagination, embodiment and Territory ", funded by ESRC, co-supervision with Prof. Denis Cosgrove, Dr. Catherine Nash, completed successfully in July 2002.
- Patricia Phillip (PhD), " Environmentally sustainable development and Informal sector housing: A case Study of St. Lucia " Advisor for a period of 1996-1999, supervised by Prof. Robert Potter completed successfully in August 1999.
