PhD Students

I welcome applications from suitably qualified students who are interested in Non-Governmental Organisation and Civil Society, Community Participation, Low-income housing for the urban poor, Impact of Globalisation and Economic Liberalisation on Gender, Poverty, survival strategies and livelihoods in urban context and ageing.

Postdoctoral supervision

• Dr. Yutaka Sato (Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) - was funded by the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship of the Canon Foundation in Europe (from Sept 2006 – Sept. 2007), on research entitled “Urban Poverty, Women’s Empowerment and Grassroot Organisations in Ahmedabad, India”. Dr. Sato was appointed as Assistant Professor to the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, Japan in March 2008.
  
  
• Dr. Elisa Bignante, (Senior lecturer, University of Torino, Faculty of Political Sciences) was funded as part of a programme promoted by the University of Torino (WWS-Worldwide style project) to spend six months (mid-September 2009 to mid-March 2010) writing up her field-work research from the Arusha district in Tanzania with a particular attention to the role of decentralized in promoting local development.

Current PhD supervision

• Fiona Nash “The production of risk in changing water governance relations: water and sanitation Millennium Development Goals in Accra, Ghana” supervisor (co-supervision with Dr. Mary Dengler and Dr. Alex Loftus), funded by the ESRC 1+3 Studentship (Sept. 2009-Sept. 2013).

• Stephen Jones “Improving governance at the local level to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals for Water and Sanitation: the case of WaterAid in Mali” main supervisor (co-supervision with Dr. Mary Dengler and Dr. Alex Loftus), funded by the ESRC 1+3 Case Studentship (Sept. 2008-Sept. 2012) in collaboration with WaterAid, London.

• Sorayya Khan 'Community participation in health provision in Mali' (advisor), self-funded, 2005-present

• Imsook Jo " Empowerment and Women's Environmental Co-operative movement in Japan " main supervisor (co-supervision with Katie Willis), self funded, from Nov. 2003

Completed PhD Supervision

• Stephen Bell "Empowering youth: NGO intervention and youth participation in rural Uganda " main supervisor (co-supervision with Prof. David Simon), funded by the ESRC +3 Research Studentship from Sept 2003.

• Alli Dhanaraj (PhD), " The Institutions for the Care of The Aged - a socio-economic Study in Chennai ", funded by the Commonwealth Scholarships (Split-Site award), co-supervisor from Sept. 2001 -Sept 2002 based at the Mother Teresa Women's University, Kodaikanal , India .

• Samantha French (PhD), " Empowerment, Social Capital and Non-Governmental Organisations In India ", funded by Royal Holloway College fees only studentship, principal supervisor from Jan.2001 (withdrew due to financial hardship).

• Tariq Jazeel (PhD), " Sri - Lankan identities: Imagination, embodiment and Territory ", funded by ESRC, co-supervision with Prof. Denis Cosgrove, Dr. Catherine Nash, completed successfully in July 2002.

• Patricia Phillip (PhD), " Environmentally sustainable development and Informal sector housing: A case Study of St. Lucia " Advisor for a period of 1996-1999, supervised by Prof. Robert Potter completed successfully in August 1999.
