2011 Final year ICT4D students from Royal Holloway, University of London, gave presentations on their work in ICT4D at Cisco's headquarters at Bedfont Lakes in the UK. Collective postgraduates take active role in IPID conference in Barcelona,
9th-10th September 2010 Members of the Collective played an active role in the 5th annual conference of the International Network for Postgraduate Students in the Area of ICT4D (IPID) held at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona. Salma Abbasi and Ugo Vallauri presented papers, Tim Unwin gave a keynote on impact assessment, and Marije Geldof also participated. |

Collective hosts workshop on Child Headed Households, 11th June 2010 The Collective hosted the LifeLine Network and FrontLine Development Trust workkshop on Child Headed Households at Royal Holloway, University of London on 11th June 2010. This was designed to grapple with complex issues surrounding questions such as 'How should child headed households be defined and described?', 'How can we build long term sustainable solutions without ignoring immediate need or reinforcing dependency?', 'What are the key aspects of a holistic sustainable solution?', and' Whose responsibility are these family units?' |

@ Science Open Day, Royal Holloway, University of London, 27th March 2010 Thao Nguyen, Bjorn Everts and Veronica Chuma hosted a display of the Collective's work at the Royal Holloway, University of London, Science Open Day on 27th March 2010. This provided an excellent showcase for the wider relevance of ICT4D as well as for some of the detailed research and practice that colleagues in the Collective are undertaking. Tim Unwin also hosted a day long quiz about science for schools in the local area. |

Berry gave a public lecture on Colalife
on 25th January 2010 Simon Berry visited the Collective on 25th January and gave a public lecture on the Colalife campaign, which wants Coca-Cola to open up their distribution channels (which are amazing in developing countries) to carry 'social products', such as oral rehydration salts, to the people who need them desperately. This could be done by incorporating an 'aidpod' into Coca-Cola crates. The content of the aidpods would be locally determined by health professional |

Consortium Workshop at Eduardo Mondlane University, 14th-23rd January 2010
Ugo Vallauri, Jorrit Mulder and Tim Unwin joined with colleagues from the University of Eastern Finland (Finland), University of Education, Winneba (Ghana), Tumaini University (Tanzania), Maseno University (Kenya), the Université Cheikh Anta Diop (Senegal) and Eduardo Mondlane University at the workshop held in Maputo from 14th - 20th January 2010 as part of their Edulink funded ICT4D Consortium of African and European higher education institutions. They then all participated in the Technology for Innovation and Education in Developing Countries also held at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo from 21st-23rd January. Tim gave a keynote entitled "On the richness of Africa: implications for e-learning', and Ugo and Jorrit presented a paper entitled "An introduction to the ICT4D Consortium's Virtual Environment". |

London, 25th April 2009 Members of the Collective were actively involved in the lively Africa Gathering convened at Birkbeck College in London by Ed Scotcher and Mark Simpkins on 25th April. The Collective was an official supporter of the event, Tim Unwin gave an opening address, and David Hollow presented a paper on the $100 laptop in Ethiopia. Other members of the Collective participated in the discussions and seminars. |

Doha, 17th-19th April 2009 The Collective played an active role in ICTD2009 in Doha, 17th-19th April 2009:Dorothea Kleine (Honourable Mention) and David Hollow were among the 19 selected paper presenters; Uduak Okon was selected to give one of 27 poster presentations; David Hollow was joint convenor of the workshop on 'What makes good ICTD research'; Dorothea Kleine gave a demo on 'Understanding the Provenance of Ethically Produced Goods'; Marije Geldof, Paolo Brunello and Ugo Vallauri presented position papers at the Young Researchers Workshop; and Tim Unwin was a.commentator on the papers contributed to the Young Researchers Workshop, and also served as one of the Senior Program Committee members for the Conference as a whole. Cooperation Forum on ICT Research, 25th-26th March 2009 Members of the Collective participated in the Euro-Africa Coperation Forum on ICT Research, held at the Eurpean Commission in Brussels, 25-26 March 2009. at Tumainai University's Iringa Campus, January 2009 The Edulink funded consortium between universities in Denmark, Finland, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania and the UK held its first workshop from 6th-18th January 2009 in Dar es Salaam and at the Iringa Campus of Tumaini University in Tanzania. This provided an excellent opportunity to cement the partnership, design a digital networking environment, and prepare frameworks for shared content development. to UNESCO Chair in Women, Science and Technology in Buenos Aires Dorothea Kleine met the team of the UNESCO Chair in Women, Science and Technology at the Argentinian office of the FLACSO (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales) in Buenos Aires on 2nd November 2007 to discuss future research collaboration. The team there conduct research and offer policy advice in the field of gender and ICT across Latin America. They also teach a popular Virtual Master's Program on Gender, Society and Policies. |

National ICTs in Basic Education Congresss, The Philippines Tim Unwin was an invited guest at this Congress held in Cebu on 6th and 7th September, where he presented both a plenary paper entitled 'Sustainabililty and Strategic Partnerships in ICT4E' and a parallel session paper on 'ICTs and Teacher Training: Case Studies from Across the World'. He also participated in discussions relating to the eSkwela programme for using ICTs in support of out of school youth. |

ICT4D
Students visit UNESCO's Information Society Division, 9th-11th April 2006 Undergraduates studying the ICT4D course participated in a workshop at the Paris offices of UNESCO's Information Society Division on 10th April, during which they gave presentations on aspects of the use of ICT for development. They were welcomed by UNESCO's Assistant Director General, Abdul Waheed Khan, and the Director of the Information Society Division, Liz Longworth. Other staff at UNESCO participated in the discussions, and some of the Collective's postgraduate students also gave research presentations on 11th April. |

Executive of the Disablement Association of Zimbabwe and Chief Executive
Officer of LifeLine visit the Collective Edmore Hute (Chief Executive of the Disablement Association of Zimbabwe) and Avril McIntyre (Chief Executive Officer of Lifeline), accompanied by John Singleton (LifeLine), visited the Collective on 1st March 2006 to discuss ways of using ICTs to support African people with disabilities, focusing particularly on the 1,300,000 people in Zimbabwe registered as having disabilities. |

Visit
of Professor Salukvadze from Tbilisi State Univeristy, 26th February - 7th
March 2006 Joseph Salukvadze, Head of Human Geography at Tbilisi State University, visited the Collective from 26th February to 7th March to explore research collaboration and teaching practices in UK universities, funded by The British Academy. One of the core focuses of the visit was to develop closer collaboration with the Collective in the field of Geographical Information Science. |

e-Learning
for Out of School Youth in the Philippines, 15th-27th January 2006 Tim Unwin presented workshops on ICT for Teacher Training and on Monitoring and Evaluation of ICT for Education initiatives at the National Computer Centre in Manila on 19th and 24th January 2006. Together with colleagues from the Commission on ICT, he also held focus groups in three different parts of the Philippines as part of the preparatory work for the Commission's eSkwela programme to support out of school youth through e-Learning. |

Language Teaching initiatives Eric Baber was a keynote speaker at the British Council/DOS Teacher Training Solutions ELT e-learning conference in Warsaw and Gdansk, Poland, in December 2005. He was a speaker at the British Council Manchester seminar on ICT and ELT in February 2006 and was also a plenary speaker at the annual ELT conference of the Language Centre in the Sultan Qaboos University of Oman in April 2006. |

ICT4D Collective at WSIS/SMSI, 15th-18th November 2005 Members of the ICT4D Collective played active roles in parallel sessions and events held during the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis: Michelle Selinger (moderator) and Tim Unwin (rapporteur) contributed to the Cisco session on ‘e-education and e-government’; Tim Unwin was a speaker at the International Literacy Institute, infoDev and EARTF session on ‘pro-poor issues on ICT for education’; Salma Abbasi was a speaker at the IDRC/SIDA/SDC session on ‘ICT in the hands of women; and Dorothea Kleine spoke on Chilean microenterprises and public ICT policy in a session on the 'role of ICT in economic growth and socio-economic development'. Several publications by members of the Collective were launched during the Summit, and Dorothea Kleine also co-organised the ITID joint session with Harvard Law School at which MIT Press's Open Access Model for journals was launched. |

Park Conference, October 2005: Becoming an Information Society The ICT4D Collective collaborated with Wilton Park, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Global Knowledge Partnership and SPIDER to convene a conference on "Becoming an Information Society: the Role of New Information Technologies in Development" at Wilton Park from 17th-20th October 2005. Speakers included Lídia Brito, Rinalia Abdul Rahim, Myles Wickstead, Subbiah Arunachalam, Chris Parker and Tim Unwin. |

and Club of Rome World Conference on ICT for Capacity Building, 11th-13th
May 2005 Tim Unwin served as Moderator for the interactive session of the UNESCO and Club of Rome World Conference on ICT for Capacity Building held in Paris in May 2005, bringing together audiences in France, Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait. This formed one of UNESCO's thematic meetings in preparation for the second meeting of the World Summit on the Information Society to be held in Tunis in November 2005. |

Holloway, University of London, Science Open Day, 19th March 2005 The ICT4D Collective had an interactive display featuring the work of Cisco, HP, DFID, DfES, UNESCO and the British Council in the Queen's Building all day on the 19th March. Guide to a Better World launched, 15th November 2004 The Rough Guide to a Better World, a joint initiative between the U.K.'s Department for International Development and Rough Guides was launched on 15th November. Free copies are available from all UK Post Offices from 29th November 2004, and online by clicking here. Tim Unwin's photograph of Ethiopian children is used for the front cover and features on the guide's publicity materials. |

Seminar with InWEnt, 4th-5th November 2004 The ICT4D collective was invited to help the German international capacity buiding organisation InWEnt to deliver its fourth e-Learning seminar in Bonn from 4th-5th November 2004. Tim Unwin, Dorothea Kleine, Barbara Hatzimichail, Michelle Selinger and Marije Geldof all participated in various ways during the seminar, full details of which are available through the Global Campus 21 portal here. The seminar's aim was to stimulate and strengthen discussion and exchange on the subject of e-learning in development policy between international organisations and researchers in the development sector. Participants attended from all over the world and from places as diverse as Bangladesh, Brazil, the Philippines, South Africa and Uganda, as well as European countries including Germany, the Netherlands, France, and the UK. Elizabeth Longworth, Director of UNESCO's Information Society Division, gave the keynote dinner lecture on 4th November. Full documentation on the results of the workshop is available here. |

Executive of SchoolNet Uganda vists ICT4D Collective at Royal Holloway,
University of London Daniel Kakinda, Chief Executive of SchoolNet Uganda visited the ICT4D collective from 6th-9th November 2004. He presented a seminar in the Centre for Developing Areas Research on 8th November, and then gave an introductory lecture on the work of SchoolNet Uganda for students studying the ICT4D course in the Geography Department on 9th November. |
