Dr Dorothea Kleine is Lecturer in Human Geography and a member of the Centre for Developing Areas Research (CEDAR) and the ICT4D Collective/UNESCO Chair in ICT4D, which brings together researchers working in the field of information and communication and development.

Her research interests include: information and communication technologies and development; development theory; globalization; Fair Trade; ethical consumption; gender; and regional and local economic development. Dorothea has mainly worked in Latin America, with recent research is also taking place in India and Kenya.

Before joining Royal Holloway, she was a Research Associate at Cambridge University and a Lecturer at Bonn University. Parallel to her studies at LMU Munich, Oxford and the London School of Economics, she trained as a journalist and has worked freelance for print, radio and TV media.

Outside roles include:

  • General Programme Chair, IEEE/ACM International Conference on ICT and Development 2010
  • Member of the UNESCO UK Information Society Working Group
  • Committee Member of the Developing Areas Research Group (DARG) at the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers
  • Consultant/advisor to EuropeAid, DFID, the German Development Agency (GTZ), InWent and to NGOs
  • Reviewer for Environment and Planning A; European Urban and Regional Studies; Geographical Review; Interacting with Computers; New Media and Society; Ethics and Information Technology and Sage
