Second Year Undergraduate: co-leader of Development and Environment field trip to West Pokot, Kenya

This fieldtrip demonstrates many of the principles of development in a marginal semi-arid area of northern Kenya. It aims to demonstrate that in such an environment, peoples’ activities are governed to significant extent by the natural environment, and that human interference in natural environmental processes leads to problems of development.

Third Year Undergraduate: Tropical Land Management in a Changing Environment

The course provides students with an understanding of the importance of earth surface materials in tropical resource use and management, and provides an appreciation of the nature of the land resource in tropical environments. It also aims to highlight the importance of an understanding of soil and geomorphological processes to human-induced environmental degradation in these environmentally-sensitive regions.  The sustainability of tropical farming systems is examined, with particular reference to the potential effects of global warming.
