There are currently around 35 PhD students affiliated to the Social and Cultural Geography Group, one of the largest group of doctoral students in social and cultural geography in the UK. Financially, the majority of 'home' (UK and EU) students receive support from the UK research councils, specifically AHRC awards (the Department holds an annual AHRC quota award) and ESRC awards (the Department is one of the strongest contributors to a new ESRC Doctoral Training Centre). The group has been particularly successful in attaining collaborative studentships from both the AHRC and ESRC, which involve students working with major external organizations, such as the Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of London, Botanic Gardens Conservation International at Kew, and the National Maritime Museum. Overseas students are supported from a variety of sources including home country funding bodies, and Royal Holloway studentships. Full details of funding opportunities can be found at: http://www.gg.rhul.ac.uk/postgrads/funding.html

A list of the Group's PhD students' topics is provided via the links above.

The group has a very active PhD culture. In order to support the work of PhD students the Group organises a fortnightly series of seminar-workshops (landscape surgery) in Royal Holloway's house in Bedford Square, Bloomsbury, Central London. In addition, the Group's PhD students regularly organise conference sessions at the annual conferences of the AAG and RGS-IBG. The group also makes funds available for workshops and other events focused on PhD students’ interests, with major academics invited as contributors or commentators.
