An interdisciplinary workshop
25 January 2008
The emergence of new temporalities and spatialities in the context of accelerating globalisation and migration prompts new questions about the meaning and relevance of citizenship both as a concept and practice today. There has been a proliferation of views and critical approaches towards the study of citizenship but scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds tend to tackle these questions with different emphases. Can we converse productively across disciplinary divides? What are some of the insights that distinctive disciplines can draw from one another to enhance our understanding of citizenship studies?
Elaine Ho organised a one-day workshop and invited scholars from a range of disciplines to engage in an interdisciplinary dialogue on citizenship and migration research. The workshop, held on 25 January 2008, was supported by the SCG and PERG research groups. The participants included Adrian Bailey (University of Leeds), Luiza Bialasiewicz (Royal Holloway), Rainer Bauböck (European University Institute), Engin Isin (Open University), Eleonore Kofman (Middlesex University), Elizabeth Mavroudi (University of Loughborough), Joe Painter (University of Durham), Nira Yuval-Davis (University of East London) and other staff and postgraduates from Royal Holloway. The event generated lively debates and the participants exchanged constructive feedback that helped advance mutual disciplinary understandings of citizenship and migration scholarship.
