Mr Donald Thompson

My principle interests are concerned with contemporary hillslope and fluvial processes, water quality management in the peri-urban tropics and issues relating to river management and flooding. I have worked on soil erosion processes, alluvial fans and ephemeral channels in southern Spain and have led the first year undergraduate field week to southern Spain since 1990. I have also participated in expeditions to Iceland and the Himalayas, the latter as part of Earthwatch projects concerned with glacio-fluvial processes in NW India. Between 1999-2002 I have been one of three principle investigators from the CEDAR research group in the Department, working on a DFID funded project on Environmental management in the peri-urban zone of Kumasi, Ghana. In this project I have been principally concerned with monitoring water quality in the urbanised catchment, working with members of the Kumasi branch of the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency and in developing strategies for involving Junior age school children in water quality monitoring.
