Geography is a diverse and exciting subject, which allows students to examine and understand key environmental, economic, social and political issues. As a diverse subject, it allows students to obtain a range of learning experiences and skills which make Geography graduates highly attractive to a wide range of future employers.
The Geography degree programme at Royal Holloway is flexible, allowing you to maintain an interest in a breadth of geographical topics, or to focus on particular areas of interest. In the first year, students take a common set of courses across the discipline, so providing a solid basis for future study. In the second and third years, students are able to pick from a wide range of optional courses.
Teaching standards in the Department are very high. In the Periodic Review (March 2007) the panel (including external assessors) concluded that “the Department has a clear strength in fostering a climate of mutual respect between staff and student in which teaching and learning can flourish.”.
The Geography Department is consistently ranked in the top tier in national research assessment exercises. This means that members of academic staff are acknowledged as international experts in their field. All members of academic staff teach undergraduates.
All students are allocated to a tutor when they arrive. Tutorial groups usually number 5 or 6 students. Academic tutorial support is provided at least once a fortnight in the first year, while regular tutorial meetings are also organised in the second and third years. Tutors also provide pastoral support as appropriate. The Periodic Review panel commended the Department for “an exemplary undergraduate tutorial system, which contributes to very high progression rates.”
Fieldwork is a vital part of the Geography degrees at Royal Holloway. All students will have a chance to experience and learn about different geographical environments in both the UK and overseas.
We have outstanding, state-of-the-art facilities for both physical and human geography.
The Department is a friendly and lively place to work and study. The student-run Geography Society organises regular events and won the Student Union prize for ‘Most Sociable Society’ in 2007.
Studying Geography at Royal Holloway provides excellent career opportunities in diverse fields. Our students are very successful in finding employment after graduation in fields such as environmental research, logistics planning, finance, human resources, non-governmental organisations and teaching. A significant number of students go on to study for Master’s degrees and PhDs.
