First Year Courses
This programme is offered as a full-time course, normally lasting three years. It is characterised by strong progression and opportunities for specialisation through the programme. The course also has a strong compulsory spine, running into years two and three, in research training and fieldwork, culminating in the production of an independent dissertation. There are no formal differences between the BSc and BA programmes: you are able to choose the title that best fits your programme content and career aspirations after discussion with your personal tutor.

Second Year Courses
In the second year you choose 3 from a range of 6 option courses. The second year courses are integrated courses in substantial areas of the discipline, which take you beyond the introductions provided in the first year, and provide a basis for the research-led specialist options in the third year. You may choose to substitute one of the courses for other courses outside the department. You are advised on appropriate combinations and pathways depending on your interests and possible future career paths. You are also required to take a compulsory course in research methods and design, which culminates in a specialist field course (current field destinations Kenya, Ireland, New York).

You may choose to substitute up to one course unit for other courses outside the department. You are advised on appropriate combinations and pathways depending on your interests, second year options and possible future career paths. You are also required to complete an independent research dissertation. This is seen as the culmination of training in research design, research techniques, analysis, and presentation.
